A Month in Review: August & September 2020
I told y’all it would be hard for me to maintain even a once a month post. Here I am catching up on August and September as October rushes in. 😊
August and September were gloriously busy months. I know that one of these days my introvert self will be crying to stay home and slow down (most likely when it’s 10* outside and dark at 4 pm). But for now, I’m loving all the activity and movement in our lives!
In August and September, we hosted back to school parties for each of the girls’ classes and we celebrated birthdays (Grace’s and mine). We went back to school (live and in person!) and we resumed sports and clubs and drama practice and all the things. I went back to work and Emma left for Basic Training. Our living room furniture arrived after a 3 month wait and we decided to tear into the kitchen and see what’s behind the walls (It’s concrete. Concrete is behind the walls. And some really old plaster.) I found a few new podcasts I love (I’m not a huge podcast fan, but The Next Right Thing, The Lazy Genius, and 10 Things to Tell You are my weekly companions in this season of life), and Matt and I took a long weekend trip to Austin where we rode scooters, ate way too much Torchy’s Tacos, and I got my nose pierced. We rounded out the last couple of months with a fun dinner party I hosted for some girlfriends and a few nights later we watched the most disturbing, yet entertaining, Presidential debate ever.
August and September did not disappoint, and I’m counting on October to show up in big ways.
Some Questions for Reflection….
Where did you see God in August & September?
I saw God in dozens of “Happy Birthdays” from students and friends on my birthday. I saw God in my girl finally getting to leave for Basic Training. I saw God in one daughter leaving a locker note for her sister who was hurting. I saw God show up in work with students and teachers, and I saw God in conversations with Matt and my girls and so many others here at home.
What’s one thing you learned in August & September?
Communication is work. And so is marriage. While life can look pretty great from the outside, we all have demons we battle on the daily, and that can get exhausting. This certainly wasn’t something new I learned, but I have been reminded of it frequently in recent weeks. But I’ve also been reminded that the work is worth it and marriage and family and those we love most are worth fighting for.
What’s the best thing that could happen in October?
I will say again that Covid could go away. I’ll keep banging that drum until it happens. Aside from that, laughter, time with family and friends, healthier relationships, and a closer relationship with Jesus.
What will peace look like next month? One thing we can count on is that time will move us along, but how? What will it look like to carry the peace that passes all understanding with us into the next 30 days?
Peace will look like shorter days and longer nights. It will look like blue October skies and falling leaves. It will look like cozy sweaters and dropping temperatures. I don’t love fall, because it means winter is coming, but I’m doing my best to savor this one.
I hope that your October is full of delight and wonder. I hope that whatever season of life you are in that you can see God show up in big and small ways this month and that you can know how deeply and dearly you are loved.
